Scooter Subcommittee Update – August 2024

In our June meeting the scooter subcommittee received updates from Greg Cieciek regarding Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) efforts:

  • DOTI is completing its one-year data collection process, which it deemed necessary prior to making any changes to confusing signs on bike lanes, implying that they were for bicycles only. We hope that they will conclude, as we did over a year ago, that changing the “Bikes Only” signs to “Bicycles and Scooters Only” or their suggested “Bikes+ Only” is part of the solution for reducing scooter riding on sidewalks.
  • DOTI is updating its hotel public service announcement (PSA) brochures and developing business card-sized keycard folder inserts with QR codes regarding scooter riding rules. If requested, the scooter subcommittee will again provide volunteers to help distribute the updated information to hotels.

Past and upcoming scooter subcommittee accomplishments include:

  • The UpDoNA-produced PSAs are again being displayed on changeable message signs controlled by the Denver Theater District on a time-available basis.
  • Monthly meetings with Denver’s Executive Director of Public Safety, Armando Saldate, continue.  Mr. Saldate reported that a special detail of the Street Engagement Team (SET) and Denver police were at Coors Field and the Convention Center on opening day for the Rockies for more active enforcement of safe scooter riding rules.  He is still waiting for feedback.
  • We will continue to push DOTI to include requirements that reduce scooter-pedestrian conflicts and scooter clutter on sidewalks in the upcoming 2026 scooter company license agreements. This effort included sending a letter to DOTI’s Executive Director, Amy Ford, on June 21st.

Please continue to report improperly parked scooters and scooters being ridden on sidewalks to the DOTI reporting site.  The reporting site can be reached in two clicks on the UpDoNA website–on the home page, click on the “Report an Issue” link in the upper right-hand corner above the UpDoNA logo; on the next page, click on the “To report scooter-related violations, go to the Reporting Form” link in the “MISC Issues” box.

In our June meeting, we decided to meet every other month.  Please join us for our next meeting on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at 4:00 PM in the 10th-floor common area of the Spire. The meeting will last only one hour, so we can attend the Downtown Denver National Night Out hosted by UpDoNA, LoDoNA, and the Downtown Denver Partnership.
